Early sockeye numbers were blown out of the water this weekend, as what started off as a closed fishery, opened up on the weekend with surprisingly good results.
Sport fishing advisory board member Bob Cole said more than 200,000 sockeye have gone thorough the counters at Stamp Falls, and he expects DFO will double their run size estimate this week.
Returns were strong enough to allow First Nations gillnetters onto the river to fish for food, but their is no commercial sales agreement in place yet.
Cole said anglers were getting their 2 fish limits quickly ahead of today’s commercial gillnet opening and an expected seiner opening later this week.
