With the downturn in the sockeye fishery this year, members of the local First Nations are excited about a new year-round fishing opportunity about to begin.
The Tseshaht – Hupacasath Fishing Partnership has invested more than $420,000 to beging an offshore crab fishing venture, selling the product out of live tanks currently being installed at the Tseshaht Market
Tseshaht Fisheries Manager Andy Olsen says it will provide jobs and a new economic driver for local First Nations.
Partially funded by the Pacific Integrated Commercial Fishing Initiative, Olsen said they’ve had the crab licence for a few years, and hope to start fishing in July.
