Port Alberni’s first overdose prevention site is now open at the corner of Third and Bute.
Staffed by two trained people from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wes Hewitt from the Port Alberni Shelter Society says he hopes further funding will allow 24-hour staffing.
He said 24 people have died of drug overdoses in the central island region already this year, and that the deadly fentanyl and carfentanyl drugs are definitely here in the Alberni Valley.
Hewitt said helping addicts use drugs in a safe, supervised manner will ultimately benefit taxpayers by preventing the spread of diseases and reducing police and paramedic calls.
The site has been open since May 1st.
