A group of mid-island residents who’ve given up on rail, want to see the tracks pulled up and turned into trails.
The group called Friends of Rails to Trails Vancouver Island has been lobbying local governments, and while rebuffed by the Alberni Clayoquot Regional Board, they found support with the Regional District of Nanaimo, who have long been critical of the Island Corridor Foundation.
ACRD Director Jack McLeman said trails could go alongside the tracks, but he hasn’t given up on the return of train service just yet.
RDN Directors voted to send a letter to the ICF in support of converting the railway to trails from Parksville to Courtenay
ACRD Directors sent the issue away for staff to look at, but made it clear they intend to protect the rails and trestles between Port Alberni and Parksville.
